LCA for the building industry

Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a tool used to evaluate the environmental impacts of a product, process, or activity throughout its entire life cycle, from raw material extraction to disposal.

In the building industry, LCA is used to assess the environmental impacts of the construction, operation, and decommissioning of buildings.

By understanding the environmental impacts of a building throughout its entire life cycle, designers and builders can identify opportunities to reduce those impacts and create more sustainable buildings.

What are some of the benefits of using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in the building industry?

  • Buildings are a major contributor to environmental impacts, LCA can help identify key impacts and take steps to reduce them.
  • LCA can aid in designing and constructing more sustainable buildings, and reduces overall environmental impact of the built environment.
  • Many governments and organizations have implemented regulations and standards that require or encourage the use of LCA in the building industry.
  • LCA can help companies demonstrate compliance with regulations and standards and enhance sustainability credentials.
  • Increasing demand from customers and clients for more sustainable buildings, LCA can help appeal to this demand and gain a competitive advantage.
  • LCA can help companies identify cost-effective ways to reduce environmental impacts of buildings, leading to long-term cost savings and improved financial performance.

What are the steps involved in conducting a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for a building project?

  1. Determine the scope and functional unit of the LCA for your building project: This includes defining what parts of the building's life cycle will be studied and what standard unit of measurement will be used to compare environmental impacts.
  2. Collect data on all inputs and outputs of the building: This includes gathering information on the materials, energy and resources used in the building's life cycle, as well as the environmental impacts such as greenhouse gas emissions and waste generation. Data can be collected through site visits, interviews with project team members, and product data sheets.
  3. Analyze data using software to calculate environmental impact: There are various software packages available that can be used to conduct LCA. These software packages can be used to calculate the environmental impact of the building's life cycle based on the data collected in step 2.
  4. Identify opportunities for improvement from the analysis results: The next step is to interpret the results of the analysis and identify opportunities for improvement, such as the life cycle stages that have the greatest environmental impact and options to reduce those impacts.
  5. Communicate the results to stakeholders: The results of the LCA should be communicated to stakeholders such as building owners, designers, and regulators to understand the environmental impact of the building, identify opportunities for improvement and demonstrate compliance with regulations and standards, as well as enhance sustainability credentials.

Nordic BIM Group offers Anavitor LCA as a preferred tool for handling your LCA needs.

Anavitor LCA is a life cycle assessment (LCA) software that integrates with building information modeling (BIM) and connects to local environmental databases. It uses manufacturers' environmental product declarations (EPDs) to accurately assess the environmental impact of building and infrastructure projects.

Anavitor LCA helps customers determine and reduce the environmental impact of their building and infrastructure projects, taking into account design, materials, and transportation. By integrating Anavitor LCA with building information modeling (BIM), the accuracy of life cycle assessment (LCA) is increased, enabling responsible, financially sound decision-making for all types of projects, including new construction, renovations, and demolitions.

LCA TOOLS IN THE LIFECYCLE

Anavitor LCA adds extended capabilities for the user with needs beyond the two initial stages.

DesignLCA enables comparison of different design solutions with material choices and energy impacts in early stages, providing an understanding of how these choices affect the climate. DesignLCA calculates the building's lifecycle in steps A1-A3, which is the product stage with Global Warming Potential (GWP) values within building materials along with energy analysis in EcoDesigner STAR.  Stages A4 and A5 are the building production stage and are a general calculation.

Anavitor LCA is a unique environmental calculation program that calculates the final design solution using steps according to established requirements/guidelines according to an LCA standard and actual values. With this calculation, a climate declaration is created according to the requirements of local authorities. Anavitor's LCA calculation compiles the project's environmental impact in detail for users with needs beyond the two initial steps in DesignLCA.
